MoonMot emerged at the 10th edition of the Jazzwerkstatt Bern festival in 2017, when Dee Byrne and Cath Roberts of LUME were invited by Jazzwerkstatt artistic directors Marc Stucki and Benedikt Reising to perform as part of a CH/UK collaborative project. As artist-run platforms for improvised and original music, LUME and Jazzwerkstatt Bern share a lot of common ground, including a focus on the creation of new work and new ensembles. After the initial concert in Bern, LUME organised the return leg of the exchange: a slot supporting The Thing at London Jazz Festival 2017. In March 2019 under its new name MoonMot, the sextet reconvened for a six date Swiss tour including a performance at the BeJazz Transnational competition in Bern. While on tour they recorded Going Down The Well, showcasing compositions from all six band members. Bern based trombonist Simon Petermann focuses on contemporary forms of improvisation and the tonal extension of the trombone through electronic processing. He has performed extensively with the Fischermanns Orchestra holding the position of musical director since 2013. Also from Bern, pianist, keyboardist and composer Oli Kuster has a special interest in the field of jazz and electronics. He has composed music for released three albums as bandleader for the Oli Kuster Kombo. Baritone saxophonist Cath Roberts’ primary outlet is her band Sloth Racket, which has toured widely and released several albums, and its large ensemble iteration Favourite Animals. Alto saxophonist Dee Byrne has released two albums with her quintet Entropi, and is involved in collaborations including electronics duo Deemer and European quintet Y divide. Double bass player Seth Bennett leads his own projects Elegies, En Bas and What Love and plays in many other groups including Sloth Racket, Fragments Trio and Metamorphic. Drummer Johnny Hunter also leads his own ensembles and is a member of many others including The Spirit Farm, John Pope Quintet and Beck Hunters.
