Negotiating the Home: Singaporean stories on queer homes and belonging
My ethnographic film explores a range of intersectional topics through the connecting theme of food — eaten and talked over during the lunches and dinners I have had with queer people in Singapore — as food is seen as an important social and cultural event, actively contributing to what an idea of “home” and “family” means to them.
Annika - 24 minuten
Transgressafe
Safety in nightlife is a topic that has gained traction in Amsterdam in the past few years. What is safety however? And for whom? And how does it align with a desire for transgression, which is perhaps inseparable from what most of us desire in the darkness that rises during the opposite of every daytime?
Block 2: 16:45 - 18:00
Mink - 40 minuten
Lost in Light
Centered around the modern city of Toronto, Lost in Light portrays the way people in Canada navigate nighttime in an age of artificial light. The film explores people’s attraction to spectacles of light and the collective loss of connection to darkness. It invites the viewer to reconsider the mundanity of living in over-illumination as an aspect of contemporary life.
Sanne - 30 minutes
The Ocean’s Stewards
The Ocean's Stewards is an ode to the ocean. It examines the love of a group of people living on Hawaii, surfers and divers alike, who call the ocean their home and aim to protect it. The movie calls us to re-examine our connections with nature.
Block 3: 18:15 - 19:15
Manpreet - 30 minuten
Colored Frequencies, Sounds and Vibrations in Amsterdam Zuidoost
This ethnographic film shows an investigation of anti-racist and religious practices in the music and everyday lives of young musicians in Amsterdam Zuidoost. We learn how various musicians of African descent perceive and embody blackness as a way of living, being, and doing religion, and these elements inform their creative expressions. The film takes the viewer on a musical journey through different ways of doing anti-racism and religion.
Suzanne - 28 minuten
The Memory of Glitch
The memory of Glitch explores the entanglements of smoke and pixels, trees and humans, loss and recovery. When the filmmaker dives into a burnt forest in Oregon, U.S.A., memory and place begin to unravel. Her voice shares personal reflections on loss while glimpses of bare soil, rock formations and mountains form new horizons. A montage of found footage, Google Maps explorations, and material recorded during fieldwork form a new narrative. The film plays with ideas of fiction and reality and questions our relationship with the on- and offline environments we inhabit.
Block 4: 19:30 - 20:40
Vera - 33 minuten
Lyrische Lichamen
Lyrical bodies explores emotional connection in the field of male musicians. Vera follows Dutch postpunk band Shaemless on tour in the UK and the Netherlands. The aim was to capture their emotions. She did, albeit not in the way she expected. Lyrical Bodies is a merciless candid reflection on a filmmaker who kept asking the wrong questions.
Marilla - 30 minuten
Shifting forms
Female nudity exists as something that is judged and censored but craved at the same time. Art exhibits a long history of showing the appearance of our bodies and using nudity as a tool. While more classical paintings were often based on sex workers, the work as the art model and the fascination of nudity within art is the existing. The idea of being naked and having people look at you, is though something quite extraordinary, especially with female nudity. How do models perceive their own nudity and what does the frame of art present to allow this state and create nudity as something liberating and pleasant?
