Though social distancing saves lives, we still crave community and connection in these uncertain times. Introducing Dam’d Social Cinema—our platform for sharing films, while staying connected. Before each screening, one of our programmers will greet the audience and introduce the film using Zoom. During intermission and after the screening, you’re welcome to discuss the film or just say hi. Tonight, we are pleased to present the fascinating documentary Manlife (2017), featuring a post-film discussion with director Ryan Sarnowski.

90-year-old Merle is the last crusading member of the utopian movement Lawsonomy, founded by aircraft industry pioneer Alfred Lawson. After losing his company during the Great Depression, Lawson became a populist leader and messianic prophet, gathering thousands of followers to his quixotic cause. 60 years after Lawson's death, Merle—reunited with high school sweetheart Betty—continues to spread the gospel. Ryan Sarnowski's charming documentary is an empathetic portrait of a true believer, undaunted by the tides of time. It's also an amusing and sometimes alarming examination of a nearly-forgotten social and spiritual movement, which drew scores of devotees during an era of economic desperation. Anchored in the sweetness of Betty and Merle's late life romance, Manlife is a gently moving celebration of American eccentricity. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Ryan Sarnowski, 2017, US, 94 minutes. In English.
